Spoiler alert:
Aruba can be pricey, but don’t let that scare you! With a few smart tips and tricks, you can enjoy all the island has to offer without breaking the bank—and still have an unforgettable time. Stick with me, and I’ll show you how to keep your wallet happy while soaking up all the sun, sand, and fun Aruba has to offer!
#1 Why You Should Consider Not Staying on the Beach in Aruba (Yes, Really!).
I get it—coming to Aruba and not staying on the beach sounds like vacation blasphemy. But hear me out! Beachfront hotels can cost a pretty penny, and not everyone wants to shell out big bucks for a one-week getaway. Instead, consider checking out timeshares—many of them are either right on the beach or just a short stroll away, and they’re often way easier on the wallet than the big hotels. Plus, they usually come with kitchens, so you can whip up your own meals and save even more cash for fun stuff (like cocktails and adventures). Win-win! 🌞
#2 Why You Should Totally Rent an Airbnb in Aruba
I’m telling you—Airbnb is the way to go! We ALWAYS rent one, and it saves us SOOOO much money. If you’re planning a longer stay (our upcoming trip is 2.5 months—yep, we’re living the dream!), this is hands-down the best option. You get the flexibility to cook, grill out, and even do laundry, which is a game-changer when you’re staying awhile. Oh, and did I mention the private pool? Because, yes, having your own pool is as awesome as it sounds! 😎🏖️. And its perfect for larger groups! Check out more on my Airbnb page!
#3 Don’t Sleep on Grocery Shopping in Aruba!
Listen, do not be afraid to hit the grocery stores in Aruba—trust me, the food is amazing! I’m literally craving it right now. I’ve got all the juicy details on my Grocery Shopping page, but let me give you a sneak peek: they’ve got a ton of pre-marinated, pre-seasoned options that are perfect for tossing on the grill. Super easy, super cheap, and ridiculously delicious! 🙌
Oh, and their deli meat and cheese selection? On point. Perfect for packing up beach sandwiches or making a charcuterie board for a sunset picnic.
Pro tip: snag the Dutch brands at Superfoods—they’re way cheaper than the American stuff, and just as tasty!
#4 Explore Aruba’s Hidden Food Gems – Skip the Palm Beach Strip!
Sure, Palm Beach is great, but if you want to eat like a local, you’ve got to venture off the strip and dive into Aruba’s incredible food scene! There are SO many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. I’ve got the full scoop on my Eat & Drink Page, but let me drop some of my faves right here: Bingo Cafe, Café 080, Pika’s Corner, Local Store, Señor Burrito, Zeerovers, Urataka Center, and Huchada – all offering delicious, wallet-friendly local eats.
And if you’re a food truck fan (who isn’t?!), I’m obsessed with Primo’s Tacos, El Mexicano, and Chalo Burger. Seriously, go track them down—you’ll thank me later!
#5 Rent a Car and Explore Aruba Like a Pro!
If you really want to explore Aruba (and trust me, you do!), renting a car is the way to go.
Pro tip: stick with a local rental company and double-check if your credit card covers international rentals—that can save you a chunk of change on extra insurance. You can snag a rental for around $230+ a week, depending on the season, which is way better than racking up taxi fees. Plus, taxis get pricey fast, and let’s be real—getting into a taxi soaking wet after a beach day is not gonna happen!
With your own wheels, you can beach-hop and discover the island at your own pace. For all the juicy details, head over to my Car Rental Page!
#6 Beach Hopping Made Easy: Rent Your Gear!
Staying at a hotel but still want to beach hop like a pro? No problem!
You can rent beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, and even baby gear from Travel Light Aruba for the entire week. Toss it all in your rental car, and you’re set to chill at any beach on the island, whenever you want! Plus, you won’t have to spend $50+ every time you hit the beach—just rent what you need for the week at a reasonable price and enjoy Aruba’s beaches your way.
#7. Go Early to Snag a FREE Palapa at the Beach!
Want a free palapa? You’ve got to be an early bird!
Palapas (read more here) aren’t guaranteed unless you’re paying to reserve one at your hotel, so if you’re after that sweet, free shade, set your alarm and get to the beach early.
No shade? No problem—some beaches have trees you can cozy up under, but those shady spots get snatched up quickly too!
#8. Booze on a Budget: Hit Duty Free at the Airport!
If you like to enjoy a drink (or two) on vacation, make your first stop Duty Free at the airport—it’s hands down the cheapest way to buy booze on the island. You can grab as much as you want, but just a heads-up: if you’re hauling more than 1L per person, you might be taxed.
Pro Tip: Use the Reserve & Collect service to skip the line! Pre-order your bottles, and they’ll be ready and waiting when you land. Plus, discounts are applied at the end, so you get the best price. Don’t forget to use code Arubavacay for extra savings! https://www.shopdutyfree.com/en/
#9 Save Some Coin: Hit Up Aruba’s Daily Specials & Happy Hours!
Looking to stretch your vacation budget? Take advantage of the daily specials, early bird deals, and happy hours all around Aruba! Think 2-for-1 drinks, cheap buckets of beer, and killer food deals.
For example, Beach Bar Aruba in Palm Beach has the longest happy hour, running from 12–7pm! Fat Tuesday's has some fantastic specials, and the happy hour at Bugaloe? Yeah, you don’t want to miss that.
If you’re into dining deals, many restaurants offer 3-course early bird specials at great prices—Kokoa, Fishes & More, and Casa Tua, just to name a few. Eat well, drink well, and still have cash for more adventures!
#10 Pack Your Sunscreen (Seriously, Don’t Forget)!
Sunscreen in Aruba is crazy expensive—think $12+ per bottle! So, save yourself some cash and pack your own before you go. Just make sure it’s reef-safe and doesn’t contain oxybenzone or octinoxate. Your skin (and the ocean) will thank you!
#11. Drink the Tap Water in Aruba—It’s Amazing!
Trust me on this—Aruba’s tap water is some of the best in the world. Seriously, I crave it when I’m not there! I come back to the States and I’m like, “Eww, David!” 😂 But for real, it’s delicious. Just bring an insulated water bottle to keep it cold, because it’s not usually super chilly straight from the tap. Add some ice or refrigerate it overnight, and you’re good to go!
#12 Bring Your Own Snorkel Gear & Floats—Trust Me!
If you love floating around in paradise, bring your own snorkel gear and floats! I’m obsessed with my Water Hammock-- I take it to Aruba every time. It’s literally the best invention ever! You can lounge on it, sit in it, or even share it with someone else. So versatile! 😎
And if snorkeling is your jam (especially if you plan on beach hopping), bring your own Snorkel Gear. I scored mine for about $17, and it barely takes up any room in my luggage. Totally worth it!
Fantastic post with a lot of helpful information. I always look forward to getting your emails. Kandy
Great tips! Got to get back In the spring for my birthday. May get in touch to have you help with planning.
